Shoulder season wins almost everywhere: 12 destinations, and in nine of them the best window sits either side of the summer peak rather than in it. Each guide below carries a month-by-month table with weather, crowds and price — and the catch the glossy "best time" line usually leaves out.
The window is the months worth flying for. The catch is what the one-line answer hides — a burning season, a monsoon on the wrong coast, a festival that doubles rooms. What is shoulder season, and is it actually cheaper?
Shoulder season is the stretch either side of a destination's peak — warm enough to travel, without the peak's crowds or its prices. The gap is real and large. Japan's peak window: Prime but priciest — flights run 1.5–1.8× the January floor. Turkey's shoulder: Cheaper and calmer than the July–August coastal peak. Do these guides cover crowds and price, or only the weather?

Each guide carries a month-by-month table with temperature and rainfall, a crowd rating and an editorial price index that sets the destination's cheapest month at 100 — so a 175 means roughly 1.75× the floor. Where one climate does not describe a country, the guide splits it by region rather than averaging it away.
Which destination has the narrowest good window?
Vietnam: March–April. The only nationwide window; the centre floods Sep–Nov. South Korea is nearly as tight at October — the safest month; april is the priciest. At the other end, Taiwan runs October–April and Mexico City Nov–Apr: half the year or more.
